Asus Router, Rmerlin Firmware and OpenVPN options for best performance

The above thread got me interested in trying to optimize some settings for a customer in their OpenVPN configuration (RT-AC68U as an OpenVPN client to an RT-AC66U as an OpenVPN server) to get the fastest performance over the VPN connection.

They are using RDP to connect to the RT-AC66U's attached computers and in this type of use, it is fast (enough).

But they are also using SMB (\\192.168.1.154) to share files...

hi guys

this is more a question to clear up a question i have been asked over at whirlpool and one i cant explain

the post indicates he has sucessfully installed both the stock rt-ac68u firmware and the merlin fw on a dsl-ac68u and it shows all the working of the merlin firmware yet still works as a modem as well

here is a vid of him explaining what he has done



i would have expected this not to be possible and it makes no sense to me how it can be ,...

Hi all,

First, coming from provider maimed router software and seeing Merlin: WOW!
What took me weeks of mucking about to create with my trusty old Raspberry was done in minutes now. Very nice.
However.....
I am failing to get TOR to work as a socks proxy (I get it to work for all clients, but I only want to use TOR sometimes...) So I thought I'd add a few lines to torrc (after I finally found it in /tmp) However- it gets overridden, and I can't use the cool /jffs/configs/torrc.add...

Hi

Is't possible to import settings from a RT-N66U to a RT-AC68U - or do I need to do settings again manuel?

I know the backup config feature, but is't advisable to use from one model to another.

Is this an ok upgrade method for 380.58 -> 380.60 beta 2 ?

I'm running Merlin 380.58 on a RT-AC68U and want to give 380.60 Beta 2 a try. Do these steps look ok for my upgrade?

1) Run John's awesome nvram backup with -m
2) reset to defaults
3) reboot
4) flash 380.60 beta 2
5) reset to defaults
6) reboot
7) Run John's nvram restore script created in step 1
8) reboot

Hello, thank you for taking the time to read my thread.

My VPN provider, PIA, offers 2 OpenVPN config files: A default, and a strong one. Neither one is working for me.

The default one is located at https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/openvpn.zip and the strong one is located at https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/openvpn-strong.zip

When I upload my openvpn file to Merlin, here are the SysLog errors I am getting:

Asuswrt-Merlin 380.60 Beta 1 is now available for all ARM models only (Asus's latest GPL release is missing required components for the RT-N66U and RT-AC66U).

This is the first release that supports Asus's new header format, required by their firmware versions newer than 3.0.0.4.380_3000 or about. This also means that the same restriction will apply with 380.60: you will not be able to directly flash any older firmware (Asus or Merlin), nor any other third party firmware that does...

OpenVPN: Username / passwords get scrambled on applying advanced settings?

Hiya,
Still plenty happy with what Merlin can do for me, however:
A minor annoyance while tweaking my two Open VPN servers:
Everytime I apply advanced settings, my listed username / passwords get scambled- seems like a string termination problem somewhere? See screenshot below: The username on the second row and the password on the third belong together. Users on third and fourth rows get inserted?

Workaround is not that hard- but it gets tedious to enter the user / passwd everytime I...

will this delete the client and mac address allow list? what if i wanted to just delete certain clients with out clearing it all?

cause the delete offline client option dont work in .59 i am hoping it will in next release.

I've got two routers, an RT-N66U and an RT-AC68U. Both are running 3.0.0.4.374.38_1 (N66U using the em1 version).

The moment I copy and paste my authorized_keys file from one of my linux systems into the webgui Administration -> System -> "SSH Authentication key" edit box and click apply, I loose the ability to communicate with the router. This happened on both routers. The only way to recover was to clear the NVRAM via the Power + WPS hardware reset trick.

Buggy Rendering on Chrome Desktop

Using OSX 10 running Chrome desktop browser.

1. If I use the regular Chrome browser, I get this rendering error (see screen shot).
2, If I use either Safari or Chrome incognito browser, it renders fine.

What could be causing this rendering error on Chrome regular browser? I tried to pause and unpause adblock but to no avail.

first of all a big thanks to Merlin (and everyone else who contributed) for this great firmware. The main reason for me to use this firmware is the ssh daemon and ssh port forwarding.

Now to the point:
Recently I noticed that it does not matter if I set the option "Allow SSH Port Forwarding" in Administration -> System to "Yes" or "No", the port forwarding still works. I can do local, remote and dynamic port forwards via both LAN and WAN ssh connections no problem even if set to...

Hallo,

I have an RT-AC87U, a Synology DS415+ NAS and a Sony KDL-42W705B TV. All connected with cables.

I was using the official firmware on the router, but when upgrading to a higher FW version than: 3.0.0.4.378.9383
I started having issues with my TV receiving the DLNA broadcast from my NAS.

Sometimes it would be able to access the media files after a while, sometimes not at all - and rarely right away.
Rebooting either router or NAS solves that problem every time. At least until the TV...

I've been using transmission in my AC-RT56U, loading torrents through flexget. It's been working for a while, but they released a new flexget version that seems to use depend on python's lib2to3, and I've been unable to run it for a while.
From what I found out, lib2to3's installation in the system really depends on the maintainer of the package, sometimes is installed and sometimes not. Is this the right place to ask for it to be included or directions on how to get it? If it isn't,...

Can anyone point me to a detailed guide to setting up a VPN server on my router and a handful of windows and android clients. All the ones i have read so far seem to be for older firmwares and OpenVPN.
My main aim is to be able to access my home network for maintenance and media streaming.
Obviously security is the main requirement with performance as good as possible.
I have set up a PPTP server and connected but believe OVPN is the way to go?
I have followed several guides using easy-rsa...

When I start dnsmasq with following config:

  1. echo conf-dir=/opt/etc/dnsmasq-conf > /jffs/configs/dnsmasq.conf.add

Firmware 380.59 Client list problem

I just installed the latest Merlin firmware for AC3200 and when I go and click on "View List' under the Network Map section, it works for a few minutes before it stops listing the Clients.

Now it shows the number of Clients next to Clients: and if I click on The computer monitor Icon above Clients it shows Client Statues to the right under Online

But clicking on "View List" after a few minutes results in The All section not showing one Client even when there are several connected and if I...

[HELP] Accessing FTP via SSH Tunnel

Hi!

I have an AC68U running 380.59 Merlin and I would like to be able to access the FTP server using an SSH Tunnel.

Using Putty I am able to forward connections for any http service running in any port, even those in other devices connected to the LAN. Was able to access the config UI (local port 80 to localhost:80) and even SickRage and CouchPotato running on a RPi, but nothing happens when I try to forward any local port to "localhost:21" to try and access the FTP server. I know it is up...
